FInal Year Project 2022
Project Title: Design and Development of an Immersive Digital Twins of I&E Resources within SEG
Duration: 3 months
Problem Statement
Since the start of COVID-19 most of the physical learning have gone digital. Office and school work have become virtual where with the aid of internet, anyone can do work anywhere at their own convenience. However, learners often get little to no knowledge on how the physical environment would look like, if they had to visit at a point of time.
For example, a learner who has just enrolled to Nanyang Polytechnic during the pandemic period, will have no knowledge on how the machines in his lab will look like. Even with images and pre-recorded videos of the lab, the student might not have the full details of the environment and would face challenges on return to NYP. Thus, they would need a better form of virtual representation of the space, where they can self-educate before accessing and using the physical lab and machines.
Solution
With the aid of Matterport platform and a 3D camera, the ISpace@SEG at R.116 can be virtualised for learners who are interested to use the machines in the space, where they can do a self-discovery and learn about how the machines are being utilised before they start using them for the first time.
Through the secondary survey analysis, it’s found out the 3D Printing, Laser Cutting and Lathe (Woodworking) are the most suitable machines to Digital Twin, as they are the most preferred by users to use and learn.
Takeback from project.
From this 12-week FTSP project I have learnt and applied critical thinking and analysis skills. I also experienced how to manage a project well with a tight schedule of 12 weeks and overcome challenges. I understood the importance of thoroughly reading and understanding a research report or the systems manual and planning out properly before execution. This this project, I also learnt on how to use a 3D printer and a Laser Cutter & Engraver as they were part of the main project aspects.
I have improved my interpersonal skills as while doing the scanning of the spaces, I leant about managing my time well and communication with the fellow staffs and students who were also sharing the space. Modelling NYP spaces has gave me experience of endurance and patience, as it takes multiple tries and ways to finalise the best scan. And with the multiple trial and errors, this project was a
fruitful experience to show what a management project is all about.
